Cool Winter Morning

Cool Winter Morning, Watercolour on Paper, (10.5" x 14")

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and is looking forward to a great year ahead. I too had a great time, especially with the plum cakes my Christian friends shared with me :)

I did this from a small sketch I made in Nagpur. Comments and critiques please.

Hi Vinayak. Glad you had the plum cakes - YUM!
I think your colors have evoked the coolness of the scene perfectly. And the coolness is nicely counterpointed by the warmer colors of the foreground building. The only thing i would change would be the small bush to the left of the blue building. I feel it needs to be either subdued, or more soft shrubbery with it. To my eye, it stands out a bit too much.

PS. - I am trying to develop a more critical eye for my own work. That's why you got the longer critique! :)

Thanks Crystal! Yes, they were absolutely delicious!
thanks Kathryn, your critique is most useful. I agree with you. I was myself thinking of cropping out a bit of the left side.

Happy new year to you. Technically good painting. Few suggestions from my side.
1. distant foliage on left should have more soft edges (especially in winter mornings it would be more apt)
2.in overall cool color scheme , red object is striking but .the placement of the object can be better.
3. The foliage follows the height and shape of houses in foreground .i.e. on left house is small and foliage too is small and on right both house and foliage is bigger. Aesthetically the image looks imbalanced. Just a tall tree behind small house could balance out the picture.

Thanks Ajay for the critique. Such suggestions are most useful and welcome.

I love the clear lights & the nice hazy wash in the background. You have captured a very nice mood here...

Plum cakes? Sound yummy (and fattening!). I think both Kathryn and Ajay hit the nail on the head with this one. Cropping the left hand side would also soften all those dead straight lines of the buildings. The red dead centre is distracting. Otherwise you are really starting to develop your town and cityscapes beautifully. Everything of the best for 2012.
